On the market after a full refit, this meticulously maintained 85 foot schooner is currently available for sale through Boatshed Port Townsend. Located in La Cruz, Mexico Destiny has had an illustrius past having once been owned by Howard Hughes. Destiny has been lovingly restored by her current owners and sailed from British Columbia down the Pacific west coast to Mexico where she is currently on an extended cruise. She will be celebrating her 80th birthday this summer and a huge birthday party is currently being planned!

Destiny is a one of a kind Schooner commissioned by Preston Sturgess and built in Los Angeles, CA by Arthur Pankey at his shipyard and launched on Sept 17, 1934.
She has had an illustrious and mysterious life in the past 79 years. She served the Hollywood elite as the platform for special events and occasions, was used by the US Navy during WWII as a submarine chaser on the California coast and after the war, to Howard Hughes. In 1961, John Wayne took Destiny from Mexico to Hawaii and back to California.  Howard Hughes was married on Destiny and after his death, the current owner of Destiny was contacted by his estate lawyer of a secret location on the boat where a certain marriage license was located for Mr. Hughes!

Destiny is 85′ overall, 57′ LWL, 62′ On Deck, 18’9″ beam, 31′ Yard Arm, 9’10” draught, Main mast height is 81′ & Forems’t height is 76′ and hull displacement is 170,000 lbs (without fuel or water tanks filled).

The domestic arrangements would not disgrace a modern home with a full size Ameriacn fridge freezer running off solar panels! Laundry poses no problem with a washing machine on board fed by an industrial sized water maker.

The present owners Mike and Dawn have taken Destiny over 6,000 NM, 90% of the time with just two people handling her, since launching her in 2011.
She is a phenomenal vessel and the owners are proud to have been a part of her illustrious history, bringing her back to what was her former glory.
She sails with grace and style turning heads where ever she puts in to port or harbor.
With the Course & Raffee sails, Destiny can sail dead down wind with ease.  Her average speeds with 20 knts of wind range in the 5 – 8 knt range, depending on sail set.
Maximum hull speed is 10.4 knts, although we have had her at 13.1 heading downwind in 45 knots winds surfing the front side of a wave.
