The RYA First Aid at Sea Course is a a must-have for any sailor planning longer passages, or even for those just day sailing. A prerequisite for racing, especially the RORC programme and the RYA Yachtmaster programme. This simply course is both informative and fun, yet invaluable at sea.

Recommended Reading: Sailing magazines and newspapers, but this is not essential 

Course Prerequisites: No assumed knowledge

Minimum Age: No minimum but Under 16’s must be accompanied by adult. Persons aged 16+ can be unaccompanied subject to other pre-requisites having been met

Who is the course for:

Professional Skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven (up to area Category 2 under the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Codes of Practice for Small Vessels Operated Commercially), including Boatmasters, skippers and commercial workers.

The First Aid certificate is also needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF’s regulations on first aid training (OSR 6.05.2) The one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.

What we cover on the course:

The one day RYA First Aid At Sea Course covers all the basic first aid subjects, but focuses on those operating on yachts and small craft with various situations looked at from a boating perspective.

It is aimed at anyone who is going afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or coastal passages.

 

Covering

CPR. Adult – Child – Baby
Practice with a Defibrillator (AED)
Actions for drowning
The recovery position.
Control bleeding – Bandaging, Tourniquets and Haemostatic dressings.
Shock; recognise and treat it
Cold shock and hypothermia Reduced consciousness
General treatment for:- breathing difficulties, chest pain, seasickness, diabetic emergency, anaphylaxis, hyperthermia, fractures, seizures, burns, and heart conditions
Equipping a suitable First Aid Kit
How to get medical advice or assistance by VHF/SRC radio How to prepare for the evacuation of a casualty by helicopter (Yacht Skippers – Category ‘C’ Equipment)

The course is a fun and enjoyable day, with all our instructors being practicing medics, from Ambulance Technicians to Paramedics and Nurse Resus officers.

We believe that delivering the course by using professional medical staff gives a better depth and understanding.

Learning the tricks of the trade from medical staff who actually do this on a day to day basis helps with your course immensely.

Its not a dull First Aid course by any means, it is both fun and informative with lots of participation and group work.

This course is for anyone who gets on the water regularly, or for new sailors looking to ensure they have suitable skills before venturing onto the seas.

You’ll learn some life saving skills and actions in an emergency which are immensely useful.
