Course Prerequisites: No assumed knowledge
Minimum Age: No minimum but Under 16’s must be accompanied by adult. Persons aged 16+ can be unaccompanied subject to other pre-requisites having been met
Holiday Insurance: We would advise ALL our customers to ensure they have suitable holiday insurance in-place. Yachtsman’s insurance is available from a variety of souces like Topsail Insurance and can cover things like cancellations and personal effects cover.
This introduction to Spinnaker and downwind sailing is an essential course for anyone thinking of getting into more adventurous sailing or flying that “big kite” safely and skillfully.
We recommend this course for established sailors who already know the basics and can handle a vessel under sail and manage crew efficiently.
Over the two days you’ll learn about the extra rigging involved, including operation, maintenance and emergency procedures. You’ll learn effective and safe launching and recovery techniques and crew management.
You’ll learn all about effectively sail handling and how to fly an “invisible” spinnaker before we let you loose with the big kite!
We’ll cover theory and various scenarios to give you confidence and abilities which will serve you well for general cruising and racing.
Courses run in a single format:
During your weekend you’ll learn effective Spinnaker handling. Overnight stay location will depend on weather conditions.
Sailing a yacht with a Spinnaker flying is one of the coolest looking thing you can do on the water.
The amazing colours of the sail floating out in front of the yacht, powering her throught the water is an experience in itself.
Over the two days you will learn how to safely rig, fly and recover a spinnaker on a one of our 44′ or 38′ fleet yachts.
You’ll learn all about effectively sail handling and how to fly an “invisible” spinnaker before we let you loose with the big kite!
We’ll cover theory and various scenarios to give you confidence and abilities which will serve you well for general cruising and racing.

The Iconic Round The Island Race is an event all sailors should do at least once. Our comprehensive race package includes a full weekend of intensive training two weeks before the race in order to prepare you for the big day! Possibly the best introduction to the friendliest race in the Solent, you’ll see multi-million pound racing yachts mixing it in with yachts costing a few hundred pounds.
