In January 2014 the VHF Radio (Including GMDSS) course changed to fall in line with European legislation. You can take the RYA (SRC) VHF Radio as a traditional classroom course with an additional 3 hours of pre course study at home. When you book your place on the course we will send you the VHF Radio (Including GMDSS) Course Handbook (G31) to read. This pre course reading is vital as there will not be time during the day to teach the underpinning knowledge to enable you to understand the practical aspects of the course.

The course is taught in small classes enabling plenty of hands on practical experience with the radios as well as individual trainng. At the end of the course, you will need to take an assessment before you can be issued with a licence. This assessment will take about 1 hour during which you will be tested on your home study and course content.

RC radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a short range marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on a vessel and is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world. It’s also useful to know what to do, should you ever require assistance.
