An online course for all new and re-validating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

Who this course is for?

Each year approximately 4,500 people apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement in order to use their RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew. The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course is for anyone working commercially, they could be doing anything from delivering a new 35’ yacht for its owner or driving a workboat with lifting and towing gear, to running a superyacht in the Med, complete with a large crew to manage. Whatever your job is on board, in the commercial world you are a professional seafarer. As such, you are no different from the captain of a cruise liner – you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and will be held to account if things go wrong. The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR) is for all those people:

  • Delivery Skippers and Crew
  • RYA Yachting and Powerboat Instructors
  • Charter Skippers
  • Charter Yacht Crew
  • Super Yacht Crew
  • Work-Boat Skippers
  • Harbour Masters
  • RIB Drivers
  • Corporate Skippers
  • Deck Hands

Why is the RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course is required?

As competent skippers you have already passed a rigorous practical exam. In addition you will have specialist training in sea survival, first aid and radio use. But is that enough to prepare you for you new role in the professional maritime world?
SOLAS, COSWoP, MARPOL, Flag State and Port State Authorities, to name but a few, are all things that a commercial seafarer is expected to know about and understand. Like any other professional industry, commercial boat operations are subject to a vast array of rules, regulations and conventions.
The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR) aims to raise awareness of the various regulations under which a commercial mariner must operate.

What the course will cover?

The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR) will cover the legal framework that commercial operators need to adhere to – whatever vessel they work on. While we can’t teach the specific rules for every type of operation, the course will help students understand and execute their duty of care, and give them principles, guidance and techniques to make the right choices and decisions.

The course will be split into 3 sections:

  •  People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
  •  Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment, and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  •  Purpose –making sure the vessel is suitable and legal for the work, obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

At the end of these three training modules will come an online assessment.

  • You will have two attempts at the each section of the final assessment. If you don’t pass at the first attempt, you can take the assessment again 8 hours after the first attempt.
  • Should you not pass at the second attmpt you will be advised to study further before any further attempts can be made. There will be a £25.00 charge to retake the assessment after 2 attempts.
