• 9 DAY COURSES – 9 am on first day unless evening arrival arranged with us – please see above.
• MILEBUILDING WEEKENDS 7.00pm on Friday evening, usually with an overnight sail. Arrival from 6.00pm.

• BEYOND THE SOLENT  WEEKENDS 7.00pm on Friday evening, usually with an evening sail. Arrival from 6.00pm.

Commodore Yachting Barge

...the detail...

One day courses start at 9am and typically end between 4pm and 5pm. Accommodation is not provided but may be available if requested.
For courses starting on a Saturday or Monday morning, the evening before is our “meet and greet night” starting at 7pm, giving you a chance to meet your skipper and the rest of the crew. You will sleep on board overnight. We understand if this time is difficult for you to manage but please let us know if you plan to arrive later. Alternatively, you can arrive in the morning.
It is very helpful to our staff if you can let us know what time you expect to arrive by e-mailing us at When you reach Gosport Marina you should go to the Marina reception and ask for a staff member to let you on to the pontoons and direct you to our floating office. You can then make your way to the Commodore Yachting Barge which is located on ‘A’ pontoon where our staff will meet you. The marina staff will assist if you are unsure how to find us.

Start Yachting and Competent Crew
We do not expect any preparation for these beginner courses although you might like to read the RYA Competent Crew Book
Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Courses
For all courses except the combined course we recommend you refresh your theory. RYA publications make excellent reading.

Paying for your VHF Licence

If you are attending a classroom VHF Radio course or have taken the VHF course online and are attending an assessment, you will need to download and print off a licence application form and pay for your licence online through the RYA website. It is easy to do this by clicking on the button below.

...what to pack....

•Your log book if you have one already, if not you can purchase one from us (£7.49)
• For Day Skipper / Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster courses bring your plotters and dividers if you have them. You can purchase a set from us if required (£24.99). Please mark them with your name. Although we have sets on board all the yachts you will be using them a lot and it may be frustrating if you have to share.
• A sleeping bag, sheet, pillows and pillowcase*. In colder weather you might like to bring an extra blanket.
• Your own waterproof clothes, if not using a Commodore Yachting set.
• Sea boots or wellington boots
• Soft deck shoes, trainers or tennis shoes (non marking soles)
• Lots of warm clothes whatever the time of year (remember that lots of layers are better than one thick layer). In summer, sunbathing gear (you never know your luck!). Gloves, hat and sunglasses at any time of year.
• Toiletries, a towel and suntan lotion
• Any regular medication that you may require (please advise your skipper of any medication etc.)
• A small torch
• A soft bag to contain all of the above (not suitcases as these are difficult to store)

Food and drink:

• Favourite snacks, fancy tea bags and comfort foods to supplement our on board supplies!
• You might like to bring a small refillable water bottle.

Vegetarians, special diets, allergies and food intolerance

If you are a vegetarian we will  provide a vegetarian alternative to meat for meals on board.

Special diets, allergies and food intolerance can be more of a challenge to our provisioning. As a sailing school we do not have professional skills in both the nutritional and safety aspects of vegan, Paleo and a whole range of special diets. Without such skills we would hate to get it wrong and cause unintended issues. For these reasons, we would appreciate it if anyone who requires a special diet to bring suitable items from home to supplement the on board provisions.

• You will need to bring a passport sized photograph for the following courses:
Day Skipper Practical, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore, VHF Radio, ICC
• Certificates will not be issued without photographs.
*If you would prefer not to bring your own bedding you can hire the following:
• Sleeping bag and liner £10.00
• Pillow and pillow case £2.50

If you have taken the RYA INTERACTIVE on-line VHF course you must complete the course and pre exam knowledge check. You can then download the COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE. Please bring this with or you can NOT be assessed.

Unless advised otherwise assessments start at 5pm.

For all VHF courses you will need to bring a passport sized photograph for your licence.

If you miss or are late for your assessment or you don’t bring your Course Completion certificate, we will be unable to carry out your assessment. There is a £30 charge to re book.
