Rolex Fastnet Race 2009 – Update

Solent based RYA Sailing School yacht Adelaide star rounded the Fastnet Rock at 0749hrs this morning. After 91 hours at the sea the Commodore Yachting crew celebrated with a bottle of champagne and a strawberry oat cluster! After rounding the rock they set off on a down wind spinnaker run towards the next mark but fear that the wind will soon require them to harden up again. It doesn’t appear that there will be the much hoped for downhill run back to Plymouth and with a low developing, 30 knot winds are forcast for tomorrow which will give the slower and smaller boats a tough time before they reach Lands End. Adelaide Star continues to be 74th in IRC class 2.

After rounding Lands End yesterday morning Adelaide Star took an inshore route around Shark Rock and managed to move up 3 places. Now as the Commodore Yachting yacht approaches the coast of Ireland the windex continues to act as a direction indicator as the wind remains steadily on the nose. They are currently in 74th place in IRC class 2 and hope to round the Fastnet Rock in the morning.

Adelaide Star Fastnet start line 2009

Commodore Yachting Fastnet entrant Adelaide Star waits for the starting gun at the beginning of the 2009 Fastnet Race. Along with 300 competing yachts and over 2500 crew, the Commodore Yachting crew eagerly anticipate the 308 miles of racing between the Cowes start and the finish in Plymouth after rounding the Fastnet Rock off the coast of Ireland. Crew member Bob Dargen told me just before the yacht left Cowes to make its way to the start and that he was looking forward to the start of an adventure as he embarked upon his first Fastnet Race and glad to part of a great crew. Bob first sailed with Commodore Yachting when he took his RYA Day Skipper several years ago and appreciates that Adelaide Star will not be the fastest boat in her class but will provide a fantastic opportunity to get into racing. After a good start over the line off Cowes Commodore Yachting’s Fastnet team aboard their Bavaria 44, Adelaide Star are having a slow race to Cherbourg. Hindered by light winds and fog throught the race, the skipper and crew of Adelaide Star along with the crews of other competing yachts were frustrated to be drifting off the coast of France as the tide turned against them. With thick fog in the English Channel this race is proving to be one that competitors will be pleased to finish.
