Commodore Yachting offers a wide range of practical and shorebased courses in the Solent. Whether these are your first ever sailing lessons or you are an experienced sailor looking for professional sailing qualifications we aim to tailor your sailing experience to meet your individual requirements. Our instructors are all highly experienced and carefully chosen to make your sailing course both great fun and and a fantastic learning experience.

The majority of our RYA sailing courses take place whilst sailing in and around the sheltered waters of the Solent. Each course takes place on board one of our comfortable Bavaria sailing yachts. There will never be more than 5 students on board although our smallest yacht sleeps up to 8 people. All our shorebased courses take place in our own classroon situated in a floating barge at Gosport Marina. Shorebased courses are non-residential but if there is a boat available we can offer you accommodation on board for £10.00 per night.

Unlike some RYA sailing courses our courses are FULLY INCLUSIVE of accommodation on board the yacht, meals, hire of wet weather gear and berthing fees so you don’t have to spend another penny once you arrive on your yacht!

* RYA Start Yachting is the first practical sailing course in the RYA cruising scheme. Sucessful completion of this two day sailing course is the first step towards Competent Crew.

*RYA Competent Crew can be taken as a 5 day course or add another three days training to a Start Yachting course which will lead to you being awarded the RYA Competent Crew certificate.

* RYA Day Skipper Theory is the next step and is the first major RYA course in navigation

*RYA Day Skipper Practical follows on from the Day Skipper theory course and is the bench mark standard required for chartering both in the UK and abroad. You will need to have studied Day Skipper theory unless you have theory knowledge to the required level. You can do this either as a classroom course, as a navigation correspondence course or our on-line Day Skipper theory course.  Alternatively the 9 day Combined Day Skipper Course enables students to take both theory and practical in one course.

*9 day Combined Day Skipper course enables students to take both theory and practical in one course.

RYA Yachtmaster Theory follows on from the Day Skipper theory course and is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology.

Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore are practical courses with a certificate of competence awarded after an external exam.  You can also take the Coastal Skipper course without an exam.

The RYA also offer a range of one-day which are useful for all skippers and crew and essential for anyone wishing to take Yachtmaster exams or work commercially. We offer the follow one-day courses:

RYA First Aid which aims to provide a working knowledge of first aid for skippers and crews of small vessels.

VHF Radio (including GMDSS) this course will teach you how to use a marine radio and fulfil the legal oblicgation to be licenced if you own or operate a marine radio.

Diesel Engine Course provides an awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine, maintenance and the ability to rectify a range of defects at sea.

RYA Cruising Instructor course is designed for Commercially endorsed Yachtmasters and is the first RYA teaching course, at the end of the 5 day course you should be qualified to teach up to Day Skipper level.
