Why is the RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course is required?

As competent skippers you have already passed a rigorous practical exam. In addition you will have specialist training in sea survival, first aid and radio use. But is that enough to prepare you for you new role in the professional maritime world?
SOLAS, COSWoP, MARPOL, Flag State and Port State Authorities, to name but a few, are all things that a commercial seafarer is expected to know about and understand. Like any other professional industry, commercial boat operations are subject to a vast array of rules, regulations and conventions.
The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR) aims to raise awareness of the various regulations under which a commercial mariner must operate.

What the course will cover?

The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR) will cover the legal framework that commercial operators need to adhere to – whatever vessel they work on. While we can’t teach the specific rules for every type of operation, the course will help students understand and execute their duty of care, and give them principles, guidance and techniques to make the right choices and decisions.

The course will be split into 3 sections:

  •  People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
  •  Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment, and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  •  Purpose –making sure the vessel is suitable and legal for the work, obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

At the end of these three training modules will come an online assessment.
