RYA Sailing Courses in The Solent

Course dates and fees

RYA Start Yachting is the first practical sailing course in the RYA cruising scheme. Sucessful completion of this two day sailing course is the first step towards the RYA Competent Crew, another three days training will lead to you being awarded the RYA Competent Crew certificate. The next step is to take the first RYA course in navigation, RYA Day Skipper Theory followed by RYA Day Skipper Practical.  Alternatively the 9 day Combined Day Skipper Course enables students to take both theory and practical in one course. The majority of our RYA sailing courses take place whilst sailing in and around the sheltered waters of the Solent. Courses are taken on board our Bavaria sailing yachts which range from 36 to 44 feet in length.

Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore students however could find themselves sailing across the other side of the channel in France or the Channel Islands. Our sea school boats are all 8 berth yachts but we only ever have a maximum of five students on board.

Commercially endorsed Yachtmasters may wish to take the RYA Cruising Instructor course. This is the frst RYA teaching course, at the end of the 5 day course you should be qualified to teach up to Day Skipper level.

Arrival Time: for courses starting on a Saturday morning, Friday is our “meet and greet night” giving you a chance to meet your skipper and the rest of the crew. For Monday to Friday courses you can come down on a Sunday evening.

Accommodation: You will be accommodated on board one of our Bavaria yachts for the whole course. We provide pillows and pillowcases but you will need to bring your own sleeping bags and towels.

Meals: for 5 day practical courses you will receive three meals a day. Please bring your own favourite “treats” or shop for them when we go ashore as we cannot cater for everyone’s tastes!
A typical menu for the day might be:

  • Breakfast -bacon sandwiches or cereal
  • Lunch – hot pasties and soup
  • Supper- spaghetti bolognaise

For 9 day courses your evening meal will be provided during the practical aspect of the course. On weekend courses you will purchase your own evening meal ashore.
