We have a very high pass rate for out RYA Day Skipper course but occasionally people worry that maybe they will not achieve the required standard to achieve Day Skipper practical level. The criteria we have for passing a student is whether our instructor would feel happy chartering a yacht to them and so it is always a well deserved qualification to achieve. Good preparation is important and we recommend at least 100 miles of prior sailing experience and knowledge of navigation theory. You can achieve this by taking the RYA Competent Crew course and RYA Day Skipper Theory Course. You can take the RYA Theory course in our classroom at Gosport Marina or take an on-line Day Skipper Theory course at home before attending the RYA practical course.

Occasionally a student requires a bit more training before being awarded a Day Skipper practical certificate and we are pleased to offer this free of charge¹

¹ Our ‘pass promise’ is subject to the following conditions:

• Day Skipper students will need to be at Competent Crew level before attending the course.
• Students must have theory knowledge to Day Skipper level.
• A Day Skipper theory course must have been passed within 12 months of the Day Skipper practical course OR the student may be asked to sit an Day Skipper theory exam paper in our classroom.
• Extra  training will be offered subject to the recommendation of one of our experienced RYA instructors up to a maximum of 5 days.
• This offer excludes any expenses incurred by the student in attending the extra training.

RYA / ISAF Offshore Safety Course

A one-day RYA shorebased course for crews involved in racing yachts or sail cruising, providing an understanding of how to use the safety equipment on board your boat.

This course is especially useful for cruising and racing skippers together with their crews who expect to encounter heavy weather sailing. It conforms with the eligibility requirements of section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and some category 2 offshore races. You will also require the RYA Sea Survival Course to be awarded an ISAF certificate.

These regulations require a percentage of the crew to have taken personal survival training. Full details of the Special Regulations can be found in the ISAF website.

At the end of the course you will have a good knowledge of the safety equipment carried on small boats and the seamanship techniques needed to survive at sea in heavy weather. Although sailing is one of the safest leisure sporting activities and it is highly unlikely that you will ever need to board a liferaft your chances of survival in the event of an emergency will be greatly increased if you have received training in sea survival and offshore safety.

Students wishing to take Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore exams need to build quality mileage before taking a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster preparation course. We have planned a series of 7 day Milebuilding trips with the opportunity to sail to the beautiful Channel Islands, the ports and harbours of northern Brittany and the south coast of England – ideal for Yachtmaster students. We plan to combine some interesting sailing trips with some more challenging navigation and sailing skills but there will also be chance to spend time exploring ashore. This trip is an ideal opportunity to prepare for Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore or just for fun. There will be the chance to undertake an over 60 mile skippered passage in preparation for Yachtmaster exams if you wish. We are offering a 10% discount for taking 2 or more consecutive weeks or take both Milebuilding Trips to build quality miles towardsYachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore MCA exams.

Channel Island and French Coast Cruise

This summer cruise will offer a combination of offshore sailing and the opportunity to explore the beautiful Channel Islands such as Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm as well as the coast of Northern France. You will be able to visit some of the more remore islands exploring by yacht, dinghy and on foot. Stepping into a timewarp is the only way to describe the relaxed and peaceful pace of island life and but this trip will also include some challenging navigation to hone skills required for Yachtmaster exams. There will be the chance to undertake an over 60 mile skippered passage in preparation for Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Coastal if you wish.

Cross Channel Weekends 

If you can only spare a weekend our shorter 2 day Milebuilding Weekends are ideal. Leaving on a Friday evening you will have a night crossing to France (weather permitting) during which you will be part of a watch keeping system, arriving on Saturday morning. The yacht will be skippered by one of our experienced RYA instructors but the  navigating will be up to the crew. Crossing the busy shipping lanes and preparing a pilotage plan into the French port of Cherbourg are tasks shared between students but if you just want to enjoy the ride this is the perfect opportunity. After catching up on some sleep you will have a full day and evening to explore ashore before leaving early Sunday morning for the passage back to Gosport. Anyone wishing to undertake a 60 skippered mile passage can have this signed off in their logbook before taking their Yachtmaster exam.  (Please let us know beforehand).
