Coastal Skipper

The RYA Coastal Skipper course aims to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal passages by day and night. Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of  skippered passages providing a variety of different situations.  Passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations are all taught in greater detail than at Day Skipper level. You will need to have have completed the Yachtmaster Theory course or have knowledge of navigation theory to this level before taking this course as there is insufficient time to teach you theory during the week. It is also preferable that you have completed the RYA Day Skipper Course. You can take the Yachtmaster Theory course as a 5 day class in our classroom at Gosport Marina or as an On-line Yachtmaster Theory course

Coastal Skipper students should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more demanding conditions. By the end of the course you should have the knowledge, if not the experience, to become a Yachtmaster Offshore and if succesful will be awarded the Coastal Skipper course completion certificate. If you wish to take the RYA / MCA examination leading to the Yachtmaster Coastal qualification you should enroll on the Yachtmaster Coastal preparation course.

From 1st April 2012 the Coastal Skipper course fee will include the RYA new style of certificate which will be registered on the RYA database. This will improve the ability of the RYA to provide replacement certificates in the event of a certificate being lost. Students will be required to provide a passport size photograph when attending the Coastal Skipper course.

Pre-course experience required – 15 days on board a yacht, 8 night hours and a minimum of 300 miles.

Assumed knowledge – Boat handling to the standard of Day Skipper and navigation to Yachtmaster / Coastal Skipper Theory.

We recommend – that you gain extra mileage and experience before taking this course by joining our Milebuilding Weekends, Solent Weekends and Cruises,

The course can be taken in tidal or non-tidal waters and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
